March 17th was a big day for me. It was the day I deleted my older e-mail accounts that were by spam collectors (well, I kept one but more on that later). While it’s a huge pain I’d been changing e-mail addresses since the beginning of the year. And the 17th was the day I cut the cord and deleted the old addresses. At the time I deleted the mailboxes I was getting at least 50 spam messages a day and frequently over 70. These were the pobox.com addresses and pobox was stopping most of it but it still felt good to delete them.
The one mailbox I have left that gets spam is my GMail account. I’ve been impressed by how well it’s identified the spam e-mails I get. As I’ve mentioned before, I use this address when I suspect the the place I’m using it either won’t be careful with it, or will outright start using it for spam. Gmail has stopped 207 spam emails since the 18th and let one through to my inbox. There haven’t been any false positives but I have very little real e-mail sent to it. The one spam message it let through was seen as spam by Apple’s Mail.app.
Now, it remains to be seen how long it will be before my new e-mail addresses start collecting spam.
